Default Holding female

From your experience what are the chances of the female holding full term after 5 days?? I've had couple spawn, but none have held pass 3 days.

If they make it 7 days, I'd strip and tumble if you want to build the colony.

Different fish develope at amazingly different rates. My synodontis petricolas spawned at night and the next day the eggs were hatched and freeswimming, the reason I mention this is for best results on stripping early, there needs to at least be a head and tail showing when you take them from the mother .

Wow that was fast... Do you happen to know what day will they develop the head and tail?? I tried searching for eggs stages but couldn't find any.

Usually I wait at least 10-14 days to ensure good fry survival from seasoned adult petros. If u hv a tumbler and ready for the trials/tribulations/success/risk than 3 days can be a start for tumbling (as long as eggs were properly inoculated).

Here is a paper on fish development (not specific for petros but fish are fish..).

If they hold past 5 days eggs are fertile, but young/inexperienced females may spit/swallow till they get it right, once they get the hang of it petro,s are excellent mothers

Thumbs up

Even within the mother's mouth, fry from the same batch will progress at different rates. To try and give an example of this, a couple of weeks ago I had waited what I figured was a long enough wait for a red bulu I know had spawned some 7 days prior. When I began the strip I immediately I had a problem. I got about ten unhatched eggs, about 5~6 shells from what appeared to be successful hatchings. Well not being able to convince the mother to take the eggs back, I tried to hatch them myself, with No luck. Three or four days ago I looked in the upper corner of my tank and found five new fry! I'm keeping these, being my first!
